Novak Djokovic could not bear the defeat continuously, took out his anger on the racket after losing the bronze medal match

Tokyo. World's top-ranked tennis player Novak Djokovic had come to the Olympics with a dream of completing the 'Golden Slam' but will return empty-handed from Tokyo after losing his bronze medal bout on Saturday. The Serbian player was defeated by Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta 6-4, 7-6, 6-3 in the bronze medal bout on Saturday. Djokovic lost his cool several times during the match and vented his anger on the racket. Djokovic suffered a defeat for the third time in less than 24 hours. Alexander Zverev shattered Djokovic's dream of becoming the first man to complete the 'Golden Slam' by defeating Djokovic in the men's singles semi-finals of the Olympics on Friday. After that, they had to face defeat in the semi-finals of mixed doubles as well.

Golden Slam is the winning of Olympic gold with all the four Grand Slams in the same year. Steffi Graf (1988) is the only tennis player to achieve this feat. Djokovic's disappointment can be gauged from the fact that he threw his racket towards the stands after failing to intercept Busta's shot during a long rally in the third set after saving a match point in the second set. After two games, when Busta broke his serve, he once again hit the net with his racket. He then picked up the racket and threw it towards the photographers. The chair umpire also warned Djokovic after throwing the racket over the net but Busta demanded penalty points from the umpire as it was the second case of anger at the racket.

However, the umpire did not warn Djokovic after the first incident. The mixed doubles pair of Djokovic and Nina Stojanovic had lost in the semi-finals on Friday. After which he was to take on Australia's mixed doubles pair of Ash Barty and John Peers in the bronze medal match today but he withdrew from the match citing a left shoulder injury. The mixed doubles bronze medal went to the Australian pair. Djokovic has now won only one medal at the Olympics. He won a bronze medal in Beijing (2008).
