Owaisi said BJP is raising the issue of the Uniform Civil Code to get votes in the Gujarat elections

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen President Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is raising the issue of the Uniform Civil Code to gain votes in the Gujarat Assembly elections and further its Hindutva agenda. The Gujarat government on Saturday said it is setting up a committee to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The proposal for the constitution of the committee was approved during the meeting of the state cabinet on Saturday.
This is believed to be the last meeting of the Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel-led cabinet as the schedule for the state elections is expected to be announced next week. Addressing an election rally at Vadgam in Banaskantha district, Owaisi said the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had told the Supreme Court that it was the right of the Center and not the states to implement the UCC.
"Is it not true that Babasaheb Ambedkar had said that Uniform Civil Code should be voluntary and not compulsory? He alleged that the BJP only wants to go ahead with its Hindutva agenda and has a habit of raising such issues before elections to get votes.
