Covid-19: Naval dockyard manufactures innovative portable multi-feed oxygen manifold

To cater to the need of oxygen supply for multiple patients during the continued Covid-19 pandemic, personnel from Naval Dockyard in Andhra Pradesh's Visakhapatnam have designed an innovative 'Portable Multi-feed Oxygen Manifold (MOM)' employing a six-way radial header fitted to one cylinder.

This innovation would enable one oxygen bottle to provide six patients concurrently thus enabling critical care management to a bigger number of Covid-19 patients with the prevailing limited resources.

The entire found out was made operational by the manufacture of a fine adjustment reducer and specific adapters of requisite dimensions for connecting the oxygen cylinder and therefore the portable MOM.

A typical oxygen providing facility at hospitals comprises of an oxygen cylinder feeding just one patient through a Ventimask arrangement. During the continued pandemic, ventilator support are going to be required for about 5-8 per cent of patients with symptoms whereas an outsized number would require oxygen support.

The existing facilities aren't capable cater for such large requirements. a requirement was therefore felt to style an appropriate portable arrangement that would provide oxygen through masks to variety of needy patients employing a single-cylinder during emergencies which is that the need of the hour.

The preliminary trials of the whole assembly were conducted at MI Room at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam which was followed by rapid trials at the Naval Hospital INHS Kalyani wherein the portable MOM was successfully found out within half-hour .

After successful trials, Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam has commenced manufacture of 10 portable MOM with two 6-way radial headers catering for 120 patients at makeshift locations for cater for the Covid-19 pandemic.
